Household Hazardous Waste Disposal for Residents*
Residents can bring household hazardous waste for free to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at the Santa Maria Regional Landfill (Landfill), 2065 East Main Street. Make an immediate left after entering through the main gate at the Landfill.
Operating Hours:
Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
What is Household Hazardous Waste?
Household Hazardous Waste is a category of solid waste that includes, but is not limited to, materials commonly used in and around residential households that contain harmful toxic substances. Examples include:
- Antifreeze
- Batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9-volt, lithium-ion)
- Fluorescent light bulbs
- Household cleaning products
- Paints and paint thinners
- Pesticides
- Photo processing chemicals
- Starter fluids
- Used motor oil and filters

How much can you bring each visit?
Residents are limited to 15 gallons liquid waste or 125 pounds dry waste per trip.
Packaging and Transportation:
Do not mix or combine hazardous waste within a container. Containers must have properly fitting lids and be no larger than five gallons each. Waste shall be transported in closed containers and packed in a manner that prevents the containers from tipping, spilling, or breaking during transportation.
