NHIS (Non-hazardous Hydrocarbon Impacted Soil) 

In accordance with California Code of Regulations Title 27, the City has accepted Non-Hazardous Hydrocarbon Impacted Soils (NHIS) at the Santa Maria Regional Landfill since 2003. With regulatory approval from State and local enforcement agencies, the City reuses NHIS as a foundation layer for the landfill cap.

Acceptable NHIS materials are generally soils from oil field sumps, tank farm locations, pipeline leaks, or petroleum product spills. Advanced approval for NHIS deliveries is required.
