Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR)

The Santa Maria Police Department utilizes automated license plate recognition (ALPR) technology as a tool to help locate stolen cars, find wanted suspects, locate missing or abducted persons, and solve crimes more efficiently. Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) is a technology that uses cameras and software to quickly scan and record the license plates of vehicles. The system captures license plate information in public areas and alerts officers if a plate is associated with a crime. ALPR systems do not track people. 

The Santa Maria Police Department is committed to using ALPR technology in a specific, structured, and transparent manner that addresses common concerns that the public expresses about it. The ALPR system operates according to strict policies to protect privacy and ensure accountability.
