Bookmobile
The SMPL To Go bookmobile has joined our collection of resources to serve the community. This vehicle brings library and literacy services to areas of the City that do not currently have a library nearby.
The bookmobile schedule is Tuesday through Saturday at the following time and locations.

Youth Services
The Santa Maria Public Library is pleased to offer a variety of materials and programs for children of all ages. From toddler story time to homework help, we are here to help children learn and grow. We also support parents, caregivers and teachers in their work with kids of all ages.
The Youth Services area is located on the first floor of the Santa Maria Public Library in the Enchanted Forest, and is equipped with youth friendly computer stations, engaging activities, and books for every reading level. The branch libraries each house a children’s section and host youth-focused programming.

Passwords are the last four digits of the phone number on file. If you are unable to access your account, call the Library’s account services desk.
Library Cards
A library card is your gateway to the information and resources of the Santa Maria Public Library. Your card allows you to check out materials and resources, access online databases and register for programs.
Apply for a Library card online, or in person at any branch location
To apply for a card you must bring a valid government issued picture I.D. and a recent document or bill showing your current address (if not on the picture I.D.). Children under 18 must have a parent present to sign the library card application. You are financially responsible for library materials checked out with your card. Parents are responsible for children's fines and lost material charges.
Please report lost or stolen cards immediately. There is a $1.00 charge for replacement cards. The privacy of your transactions with the library are protected by California Government Code Section 6267.
Borrowing Materials
The Santa Maria Public Library has a variety of materials available for use both in the library and to check out. Patrons can check out up to 50 items at any given time. Please stop by the service desk at any branch for additional details.
All materials are checked out for three weeks at a time. If there is not a hold by another library patron, items will automatically renew two days before the due date. There is a 3 renewal limit on all items.
Overdue items are subject to a fine. Fines will be charged from the due date and apply every day the library is open.

Finding Materials Using the Online Catalog
Santa Maria Public Library System is connected to other local libraries through the Black Gold System. The catalog above searches Santa Maria’s collection and the collections of other member libraries. Browsing the catalog on your mobile device is easy with the Black Gold App.
Place a Hold
To place a hold, visit https://sm.blackgold.org
- Search for title
- Click the blue “place hold” button
- Enter library barcode and password. Passwords have been reset to the last four digits of your phone number.
- Select the pick up location
- Click “Submit Hold Request.
- Notification will be sent once the item is ready for pickup.

New York Times - The New York Times is available to read online from within the Library. You will find breaking news, multimedia, business, sports, movies, travel, books, jobs, education, real estate and more. Access to the New York Times is available outside of the Library using this link. Please note that a Library card and password are required.
Santa Maria Times - The Santa Maria Times is available on microfilm dating back to April, 1882. The link (available only within the Library) provides access to digital newspapers from 1882-2019. This database is fully searchable and the individual articles may be printed, viewed, emailed, or saved directly from the database.

Due to Hoopla’s popularity and budget constraints, the number of monthly Hoopla checkouts is five. If you are unable to obtain an item, please add it to your favorites.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Library Director provides strategic leadership and oversight of operations for the Library and its major divisions of Circulation, Reference, Youth, and Outreach Services including contracted service for four County branch library locations in Cuyama, Guadalupe, Los Alamos, and Orcutt.

2023-24 Goals and Objectives
- Enhance Library program opportunities for children and families by partnering with Children’s Resource and Referral and other community organizations to establish an Early Learning Library Hub and Library programs in alternate community physical locations around the community.
- Support the Smart City, Safe City vision by expanding Bookmobile services in the City and County with Measure U funding by adding three additional stops to the regular route and increasing outreach focusing on underserved populations in the community.
- Continue working with an architectural firm to complete assessment of Main Library layout and begin planning phase for redesign spaces, to meet anticipated patron needs and enhance the Library experience.
- Install updated security camera equipment and software aligning with the Smart City Safe City vision.
- Create an internal professional development series for library personnel to increase technical proficiency and industry knowledge, leading to higher staff engagement and job satisfaction.(Observation: This takes a nearly annual goal to the next level).
- Implement two part-time dedicated Library Security Officers, through Measure U funding, to provide continued safety for Public Library users and staff. (Observation: this is funded by the mid-cycle budget).
- Collaborate with the Finance Department to assess Library patron accounts in collections and develop criteria for resolving same to ensure streamlined operations.
- Evaluate current trends for collection development and circulation to adjust purchasing allocations, maximizing available funding, and increasing operational efficiency.
- Prepare an analysis of Black Gold services to determine the value versus cost of membership and ensure proper expenditure of City funds.
- Establish a working group with CMO to create a document outlining city values and business operational practices for clear communication to staff and the public regarding values and work alignment for the city.

Steps for applying for a passport at the Santa Maria Public Library
- Please come prepared for your appointment. It is important that you read through all of the instructions below.
1. Make an appointment with the Library.
2. Bring a completed, unsigned application form DS-11 (download application form as a PDF or complete application form online and print)
3. Bring proof of United States citizenship. These must be original documents – no copies. Original documents must be submitted, and will be returned to you by the U.S. Department of State. Acceptable evidence of citizenship includes: Certified U.S. Birth Certificate, Naturalization Certificate, previous U.S. Passport (may be expired, must be undamaged).
Note: The U.S. Birth Certificate must be original and list your full name, date & place of birth, and parent(s) full names. The California Certified Abstract of Birth and the Texas Certified Abstract of Birth are NOT ACCEPTED by the U.S. State Department. You may NOT submit a hospital birth record. See the Passport website for additional requirements.
If you need your birth certificate, contact the appropriate County Recorder or Registrar of Birth.
4. Bring a government issued ID.
Acceptable identification includes valid Driver's License, California ID card, previously issued U.S. Passport or current military ID card.
5. Bring one 2-inch by 2-inch photograph.
6. Bring your Social Security Number.
7. Bring two checks or money orders for fees.
8. For passports for minors, both parents and the child must appear and there are special additional requirements.

Fees
The U.S. Department of State and Santa Maria Public Library accept only checks or money orders at this time. Cash, debit/credit and starter checks are not accepted.
Costs are determined by the U. S. Department of State.
