 CANDIDATE'S STATEMENT
DISTRICT 3
DISTRICT 4

GLORIA SOTO Age: 32
Occupation: Incumbent

I was born, raised, and educated in the City of Santa Maria. I was part of the first graduating class of Pioneer Valley High School and hold degrees from Allan Hancock College and Chapman University. I’m the daughter of farm workers whose example taught me the value of hard work and determination.

I have been a nonprofit leader for over a decade, improving healthcare access and providing education and leadership opportunities for our local youth. I’m currently the Executive Director of a youth leadership development organization and serve as Board Member for three nonprofits in Santa Barbara County.

In 2018, I was the youngest woman ever elected to the Santa Maria City Council at the age of 29. As a Council Member, I have been a responsive leader who listens to residents and builds coalitions between communities, individuals, and local government putting families, our environment, and workers first.

I am a proud product of Santa Maria, committed to making a difference in the lives of Santa Marians by advocating for small businesses, affordable housing, early childhood education, more recreational open space, and a brighter future for our families.

Vote for Gloria Soto on November 8th!

Maribel Aguilera-Hernandez
Occupation: Attorney-Business and Real Estate Law

I am a true local resident of Santa Maria. I attended Fairlawn, Robert Bruce, El Camino Jr. High, and Santa Maria High School. Upon graduation, I left for college and earned a bachelor's degree. I returned to serve my community of Santa Maria by working for local nonprofits such as No. County Rape Crisis, Future Leaders of America, and Legal Aid Foundation. I attended law school and passed the California bar. I am currently a partner at the law firm of Kirk & Simas and practice business and real estate law.

I have served on the city planning commission for the last 7 years and believe local development is very important. We need to attract companies and developers who will create local jobs and build more housing. We need to improve our public safety so that families can feel safe. We need to develop more recreational activities for the youth and improve our parks.

I ask for your vote so that I may have the opportunity to serve our community.

Name: Steven Funkhouser
Occupation: Small Business Owner
Age: 43

My family has lived in the Santa Maria Valley for six generations. From Union Sugar and the strawberry fields, to owning and operating a small business, I know there is no better place to live, work and raise a family.

However, rising crime rates, homelessness, and the lack of good-paying jobs as well as educational and recreational opportunities for our youth are making it difficult for our City to realize its full potential.

We can do better. And that’s why I’m running for City Council.

As a father of two daughters, Chairman of the Elks youth program, and a board member for Fighting Back Santa Maria, I’ve worked with community leaders on all of these issues.

Defunding the police is wrong. I have the support of the Santa Maria Police Officer’s Association, and will work with those in uniform to combat crime and keep our streets safe.

I’ll collaborate with regional leaders and organizations to address homelessness and mental illness— ensuring our programs actually work for the most vulnerable.

I’ll always be accountable to you, providing independent leadership and a voice for the City of Santa Maria and its families. I hope to earn your vote.
