Armstrong Park Playground Reopened
A new playground at Armstrong Park (1000 East Chapel Street) has been installed and will reopen to the public Wednesday morning, January 24th. The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department began removing the previous structure in March of 2017 after vandals set fire to the original playground equipment.
The replacement equipment was custom-built, with its cost covered by community donations and by Federal Community Development Block Grant funds.
The new steel-framed structure is nearly identical to the original. Designed for 5- to 12-year-olds, it has plastic coating on its decks, walkways, bridges, and slides, and also has stairs, ladders, and a climbing wall. Along with the playground, Armstrong Park also has two barbecue and picnic areas with tables and a small gazebo along a walking path. Restrooms are available on-site.
The goal of the Recreation and Parks Department is to replace or upgrade one playground each year. The next playground to be replaced is at Buena Vista Park, which is currently undergoing a complete renovation and is set to open this year.
