Active Aging Week September 24th to 30th

The City of Santa Maria Active Aging Committee, in collaboration with the International Council on Active Aging, has designated September 24th to September 30th, 2017 as Active Aging Week. The Active Aging Committee is made up of local agencies that work with City staff members year-round to promote healthy living for adults over age 50.

The theme for Active Aging Week is “Ignite Your Passion!” The weeklong observance celebrates active aging adults as fully participating members of society and promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthier lifestyle. Free activities will be held each day throughout the week at various locations.

A detailed list of the Active Aging Week activities is available online at, or at the Elwin Mussell Center, located at 510 East Park Avenue. Questions may be directed to the Recreation and Parks Department, (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.

Opening the festivities is a free United Service Organization’s (USO)-Themed Dance taking place on Sunday, September 24th at the Elwin Mussell Center, located at 510 East Park Avenue. The dance will feature live music by the Rip Tide Band, and includes vintage patriotic décor as seen at the USO Canteen dances during World War II. The dance is sponsored by the Santa Maria Valley Senior Citizens Club with financial support from the Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo.

The Senior Club is also sponsoring a Fashion Show on Wednesday, September 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the Elwin Mussell Center. This free event requires advance reservations which can be made by calling the Mussell Center at (805) 925-0951 extension 2207.

To conclude the week, the Elwin Mussell Center will have an Open House from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 30th. During the Open House, guests will have the chance to visit some of the Mussell Center’s weekend programs, and learn more about the activities sponsored by the City and the Senior Club.
