Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety Begins to Meet

More than 30 members of the Santa Maria Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety held their first public meeting on Monday morning, April 24th at the Santa Maria Public Library’s Shepard Hall.

The task force is a collaborative effort involving local community-based organizations, schools, the faith community, local elected officials, and local law enforcement. To improve the quality of life in Santa Maria, the group is creating a strategy to improve the lives of at-risk youth and their families, through a blend of prevention, intervention, enforcement, and re-entry.

Task force agendas and materials are posted on the City’s website HERE.

This is another step being taken by the City to curtail violence in the Santa Maria Valley, and to create a strategy of positive, long-lasting opportunities for at-risk youth and their families.

“This takes our ongoing youth efforts up to the next level,” Mayor Alice Patino said. “We are not reinventing the wheel here. Instead, we are modeling our program after successful approaches from other California cities. Our intent is to leverage existing resources and develop strategic partnerships within the Santa Maria Valley.”

The task force consists of two components. One is the Policy Advisory Committee, representing leaders in governmental agencies and non-profits, who will develop an action plan to help address this issue. The action plan, once developed, will be implemented by the Technical Resource Committee, consisting of service agencies that deal specifically with at-risk youth.
