Flooding Prompting Road Closures

Steady rainfall leading to flooding is causing the closures of many roads within and adjacent to the City of Santa Maria. Drainage systems are filling or full, and the Santa Maria River is flowing.

Drivers are urged to stay off the City streets if possible. Manhole covers have popped off on Daniel between Miller and McClelland Street because the drainage system became pressurized with runoff. The City has posted online this map of areas historically subject to flooding. Avoid these roads, which are closed:

• Along the City’s west side, Blosser Road is closed from Rancho Verde to Hidden Pines, and Canal Street is closed north of the Blosser Basin from Riverton to Blosser Road,
• Sonya Lane between Thornburg Street and Depot Street
• Dejoy Street is closed from Jewel to Kensington,
• Williams Street is closed from Russell Avenue to Dejoy Street,
• Black Road from Betteravia Road to Main Street (Highway 166).
• Jones from Bradley Road to Suey Road,
• Suey Road from Main Street to Jones,
• Westbound Main Street (Highway 166) from College to Miller,
• To protect the Hancock Park neighborhood near Marian Medical Center from street flooding, the Department of Public Works placed two temporary dams called a “muscle wall” on East Jones Street and Farrell Drive and Marian Drive, and at Marian and Jones. Muscle wall is a tough plastic barrier filled with water and connected by sections to form a temporary dam.

Inundaciones Provocan Cierres de Carreteras
