Free Sporting Event Experiences for Teens
The City of Santa Maria Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety is coordinating two sporting event experiences for teens in grades 7 through 12. Transportation will be provided for each activity from the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, located at 600 South McClelland Street.
The first event is a collegiate soccer match between Cal Poly’s Mustangs and UCSB’s Gauchos. The sporting event will take place on Wednesday, September 21st, at the Alex G. Spanos stadium in San Luis Obispo. The shuttles will depart from the youth center at 4:30 p.m. and return at 9:30 p.m.
On Saturday, October 1st, the teens will attend Cal Poly’s homecoming football game against Sacramento State University. The shuttles will depart from the youth center at 4:00 p.m. and return at 9:00 p.m.
Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. Participants may be registered online at www.cityofsantamaria.org/register.
The excursions are a part of the Something Fun series, designed to provide teens with experiences they may not otherwise partake in due to economic and transportation barriers. In partnership with the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, the Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety offers resources and programs to youth to deter their involvement in criminal activity, drug use, gangs, and violence. Efforts include granting free bus passes to teens, organizing field trips, promoting the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center as a safe place, and offering job exploration, leadership, and employment opportunities.
