Help end Critical Blood Shortage

Help end the critical blood shortage by signing up now for a blood drive on Tuesday, June 28th, hosted by Vitalant and the City of Santa Maria.

Vitalant is currently facing a critical blood shortage. Patients need help to ensure blood is available at their time of need. As people resume pre-pandemic activities, like travel, fewer people are giving blood. For example, Vitalant collected about 13,000 fewer blood donations in April and May 2022 than in the same months last year.

Additionally, as the school year winds down, so do many education blood drives, accounting for thousands fewer donations each month during summer. But patient needs require continuous donations to replenish what is used in hospitals every day. That is why it is especially important this time of year for donors who are healthy and eligible to give. You can make an impact by making and keeping your appointment to give blood at this upcoming blood drive:

Giving blood is safe and easy, and only takes about an hour to help save more than one life. Other added benefits of donating blood are a mini-physical and full panel of tests each donor receives. The mini-physical check of pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin and cholesterol can be tracked with each visit in the donor’s secure and confidential online account.

Questions may be directed to City blood drive coordinator Mark van de Kamp at (805) 925-0951 extension 2372.
