Santa Maria Airport Emergency Services Exercise

A full-scale emergency response drill will be conducted Friday morning, May 27th at the Santa Maria Public Airport, by the Santa Maria Airport District and the City of Santa Maria Fire Department, and the County Office of Emergency Management.

The drill will start about 8:00 a.m. and last until noon. According to the scenario an aircraft experiences an inflight emergency and crashes at the airport. This will start the drill. There will be simulated responses along with medical patients. This gives the opportunity for ambulance services and hospitals to train as well. There will be smoke from a prop.

The drill is training mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Airports with commercial service must complete a full live fire drill every three years. The drill is a realistic representation of an aircraft emergency.

Participating agencies include the FAA, Transportation Security Administration, Santa Maria Fire Department, Santa Maria Police Department, Guadalupe Police Department, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management, Santa Barbara County Emergency Medical Services Agency, Santa Barbara County Public Health, American Medical Response, American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Residents in the area will see an increase in emergency vehicle traffic in and around the Airport area in the morning through the early afternoon. The public is advised to drive with caution and avoid the area unless for normal business.  All services and companies in the Airport district are open for service.
