Paid Job Exploration Program for Teens


The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department and the Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety offer an award-winning job exploration program to high school students, ages 15 through 18, interested in gaining experience in the food service and market-retail industries.


Participants will receive free food-handler certification and 12 weeks of paid hands-on experience in cashiering, cooking, and merchandising, at the new McClelland Street Market, located at 600 South McClelland Street, within the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center. The deadline to apply is 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13th.


The market serves a variety of beverages, pre-packaged snacks, and hot food items on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m.


Providing employment opportunities for youth is a goal of the Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety’s strategic plan. For more information on the task force and its strategic plan, please visit
