Arbor Day Celebration

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department and Santa Maria Public Library are partnering up to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day with 400 students at Robert Bruce Elementary School on Friday, April 29th. The school is located at 601 West Alvin Avenue.

This year’s Arbor Day celebration will include a book reading provided by the Santa Maria Public Library’s Bookmobile Librarian, a tree planting with the assistance of students, educational activities to teach children the importance of tree preservation, and a special visit by Terry the Tree. Each student will also receive a tree planting kit to take home.

Arbor day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton. Although it is an unofficial holiday, it is nationally celebrated in all 50 states with the purpose of setting aside a day to engage the public in learning, sharing, and celebrating trees and tree planting efforts that have a positive impact on the environment.
