Teen Program at Acquistapace and Veterans’ Memorial Parks
The City of Santa Maria Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety is coordinating free drop-in activities for teens in grades 7 through 12 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday in May. The supervised after-school program will take place at Acquistapace Park, located at 1921 South Western Avenue. The program will also be offered at Veterans’ Memorial Park, located at 313 West Tunnell, on May 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th.
The activities programmed for the pop-up events in May, include customizing succulent pots in celebration of Mother’s Day, painting on canvas, making collages, and experimenting with three-dimensional assemblage art. Participants will also have the opportunity to exercise their baseball and shot-put skills, as well as play games of codeball and croquet.
The programming is part of the Pop Ups in the Park series, an initiative by the Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Safety to expand access to recreational activities into neighborhood parks. In partnership with the Recreation and Parks Department, resources and programs are offered to youth to deter their involvement in criminal activity, drug use, and gangs. Efforts include granting free bus passes to teens, organizing field trips, promoting the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center as a safe place, and offering job exploration, leadership, and employment opportunities.
