2022 National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation


Throughout the month of April, Santa Maria Mayor Alice Patino joins other Mayors across the United States by challenging residents to make a long-term commitment to managing water resources and take the pledge to conserve water. Visit to watch Mayor Patino encouraging Santa Maria residents to team with her in making the pledge. Nationwide to-date, individuals have pledged to save more than 226 million gallons of water.


This challenge is a friendly community-based competition that encourages residents to make series of water conservation pledges on behalf of their city.  Winning cities are those with the highest percentage of residents who participate in the challenge for their population category. Participants are also entered to win prizes, including $3,000 toward utility bills and a new 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid for a non-profit organization in their town.


To participate, visit Santa Maria residents who participate in this year’s challenge will receive free promotional items from the Utilities Department. To receive the promotion, residents should visit the Utilities Department at 2065 East Main Street, Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a photo ID and the email confirmation from


This year marks the 11th National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. This program was created to reward residents for positive conservation behavior, provide immediate feedback with real-time city by city results that can be measured against their neighboring cities, set goals to promote positive changes in consumer behavior, and put a spotlight on public role models to encourage behavioral change.
