Active Aging Week Events
As part of International Active Aging Week, the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is providing a series of free activities for local seniors from Saturday, October 2nd through Friday, October 8th. The weeklong observance celebrates active aging adults as fully participating members of society and promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthy lifestyle. Participants may select what interests them most and attend all the events, free of charge.
The week is organized by the City of Santa Maria Active Aging Committee, which is comprised of businesses and agencies that work year-round to provide a wealth of exercise classes, educational and social programs for adults over age 50.
The Department is offering free access to the following classes: Zumba Gold, Chairobics, Folk Dance, Beginning Ukulele Lessons, Yoga, and the Build Your Own Body (BYOB) class.
New this year are an outdoor ukulele demonstration and sing-along at 11:00 a.m. on October 4th and an intergenerational story time for seniors and children at 10:00 a.m. on October 5th. The story time is sponsored by the Santa Maria Public Library and will include a visit from the Bookmobile. Both events will take place at the Elwin Mussell Senior Center located at 510 East Park Avenue. An introductory pickleball clinic will take place from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5th at the new pickleball courts located at the Hagerman Softball Complex at 3300 Skyway Drive.
The full schedule of events is attached to this document and is available online at www.cityofsantamaria.org/recreation.
