Free Rides to Vaccinations
August 4, 2021
Santa Maria Area Transit will be offering free rides to ADA paratransit riders
to vaccination appointments
Under a temporary six-month pilot program, beginning Sunday, August 15th, Santa Maria Area Transit (SMAT) riders who are on the paratransit eligibility list and wish to take advantage of a free ride to a vaccination appointment should notify the reservation dispatcher that their intended trip is for their vaccination and be made for one of the approved Santa Maria vaccination sites.
Riders will need to book both their “To” and “From” trips if they need roundtrip service. If the rider travels with their personal care attendant, they should also identify this need to the dispatcher. A list of Santa Maria vaccination sites can be found at publichealthsbc.org. Riders who are not able to keep their scheduled paratransit appointment should cancel no less than 2 hours in advance of their scheduled pick-up time to avoid infringing on the ADA No-Show Policy and possible suspension of service.
Riders can call (805) 928-5624 from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to schedule a reservation for next-day service or up to 14 days in advance To and From a vaccination appointment. Availability varies, so riders are encouraged to book early.
The free rides only apply to vaccination trips. All other ADA paratransit trips require the standard fare of $3. If a second vaccination shot is required, then the rider must also book the second ride separately. Trips may take up to an hour to complete. Pickup and drop-off windows may reflect this. Riders who need more specialized help will need to secure their own personal care attendants, who we will also provide to travel for free under this program.
