Local Transit Adjustments Continue during COVID-19 Crisis

Beginning today and until further notice, Santa Maria Area Transit (SMAT) is adjusting passenger boarding procedures to minimize contact among bus operators and passengers, to promote social distancing during the COVID-19 crisis.

Passengers without disabilities will be directed to use the rear door of the vehicle for boarding. Passengers using mobility devices or who need to use the ramp will be allowed to board and from the front door of the vehicle.

Additionally, SMAT is suspending fares for all services. This temporary measure will also aid in promoting social distancing and minimizing close contact with bus operators and passengers in the farebox area.

These recent adjustments augment recent safety measure SMAT implemented. These include nightly bus sanitizing on all high-touch surfaces such as door handles, stanchions, seat back handles, grab bars, fareboxes, and driver areas. Safety information from the CDC on proper handwashing and social distancing is also displayed on the buses to inform riders.

Moreover, SMAT has expanded its weekend service to seven days per week, reducing the route schedule, but still providing a lifeline service. There are no changes to ADA Paratransit service. SMAT began a limited shuttle service on weekdays outside of the modified schedule to accommodate passengers that need early morning and evening services. The weekday shuttle is by appointment only and does not operate on Saturdays and Sundays. To schedule an appointment for shuttle service, or for questions on the weekend service schedule, please contact dispatch at (805) 928-5624. Riders may also view the current route schedules at

SMAT emphasizes its ongoing commitment to public health and to the safety of riders, drivers and all community members. SMAT is practicing safety guidelines recommended by the Federal Transit Administration and the CDC.
