Tiny Libraries on Tour

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, the Santa Maria Public Library, and the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture partnered to welcome the installation of public art, “Tiny Libraries.” The tiny library shaped as an exclamation point is now installed (as of today) in the Santa Maria Public Library’s Lavagnino Plaza, 421 South McClelland Street, from now until April 2020.

The books in the Tiny Library are free for the public to borrow or keep. Community members are also invited to add books to the Tiny Library. The Santa Maria Public Library will help stock the shelves and provide pop-up programming.

In 2019, the County Office of Arts and Culture commissioned Douglas Lochner to produce six brightly-colored, dynamic and functional public art “libraries” shaped as life-sized punctuation marks to be exhibited on State Street in Santa Barbara. After the successful completion of the exhibition, the Arts Commission voted to fund the transportation of the sculptures to public libraries countywide.

The Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture is a division of the County’s Community Services Department, serving as the local governmental umbrella for arts and culture projects and programs within Santa Barbara County. The Office represents a longstanding partnership between the County and City of Santa Barbara. For more than 30 years, both governments have shared resources and staff to maximize support for Santa Barbara arts and culture institutions, programs, initiatives and projects.
