Active Aging Week
September 6, 2019
Active Aging Week Scheduled September 28-October 5
The City of Santa Maria Active Aging Committee, in collaboration with the International Council on Active Aging, is designating September 28 to October 5, 2019 as Active Aging Week. The Active Aging Committee is local agencies who work with City staff members year-round to promote healthy living for adults over the age of 50.
The theme for Active Aging Week is “Redefine Active.” The weeklong observance celebrates active aging adults as fully participating members of society and promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthier lifestyle. Free activities will be held each day throughout the week at various locations.
The schedule includes a Pickleball Tournament, dance, health and wellness fair, luncheon, flu shot clinic, arts and crafts fair with Model A car exhibit, and mobile pet clinic. There will be classes in emergency preparedness and healthy living strategies sponsored by the City of Santa Maria, Dignity Health and the Alzheimer’s Association.
To “Redefine Active” there will be several planned community walks during Active Aging Week. Volunteers will walk in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk, enjoy a guided hike at Orcutt Community Park, explore Los Flores Ranch Park, and a Santa Maria Style Volksmarch that will include three routes that are 2.5K, 5K, and 10K in length.
A detailed list of the Active Aging Week activities is available online at www.cityofsantamaria.org/recreation or at the Mussell Center at 510 East Park Avenue. To join any of the community walks, R.S.V.P. for the luncheon or for more event information, call (805) 925-0951 extension 2207.
