Downtown Building Ravaged by Fire

The masonry downtown building heavily damaged by Thursday’s two-alarm fire is so badly damaged that its walls will be braced for safety, and the adjacent sidewalk and one northbound lane of Broadway (Highway 135) are closed.

Security guards are being posted at the property today and the premises will be fenced. The public is asked to keep its distance.

The 15,225-square-foot building in the 700 block of South Broadway housed Shaw’s Famous Steakhouse & Tavern and Sergio’s Furniture and Mattress.

Eleven fire engines and 45 personnel from the Santa Maria and Santa Barbara County Fire Departments, CalFire and the Five Cities Fire Authority were assigned to the blaze, which took more than six hours to contain.

Questions may be directed to the City Manager’s Office at (805) 925-0951 extension 2372 or to the City Fire Department at (805) 925-0951 extension 2255.
