City’s Budget Document Recognized Nationally for Transparency

The City of Santa Maria has again received national recognition for meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

The City’s 2014-16 budget document earned the City its ninth consecutive Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and its ninth consecutive Operating Budget Excellence Award from the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers (CSMFO).

“The City delivers a high quality, understandable, and transparent budget,” said Mark van de Kamp, Public Information Officer/Management Analyst II.

To receive the GFOA award, a governmental unit must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy guide, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device.  Budgets must be rated proficient in all four categories and 14 mandatory criteria within those categories to earn the award.

The CSMFO program recognizes those agencies that have prepared a budget document that meets high professional standards. The City’s 2014-16 budget document was awarded 94 of a maximum 100 points, its highest-ever CSMFO score.

The City Council will receive a presentation about the two budget awards at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 17th.
