How can I renew my library items (via phone or online)?
You may renew books and other library materials twice if there are no holds on the items. You can also renew items using the online library catalog under the "view your own record" option, or by calling (805) 925-0994.
I live in Arroyo Grande but work in Santa Maria; can I still get a library card in Santa Maria and check out books there?
Yes! The Santa Maria Public Library is a member of the Black Gold Cooperative Library System which means you can check out, return and renew items at any public library in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Blanchard Public Library in Santa Paula is also a member of Black Gold.
Can my child get a library card?
Yes! Parents or guardians must sign the application form for children under the age of 18.
I see items in the library catalog marked “Rental” – what does that mean?
The rental collection is an on-going fundraiser for the Friends of the Library which supports the purchase of best seller books and DVDs. For $1.50, check out best sellers for one week and DVDs for three days.
How can I check the due date on my library materials?
Login to your account through the Library website to view due dates of library materials or call the library at (805) 925-0994 extension 8563. If items are not on hold for another patron, they will auto-renew for another three weeks. Items may be renewed a maximum of three times.
Does the library offer computers for word processing?
The main library has 59, the Cuyama branch library has three, the Guadalupe branch has five, Los Alamos branch has four, and the Orcutt branch has six 6 computers available with the following programs: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
Do I have to pay anything at the library?
No. Most library services have no fees. Printing costs are 10 cents per page for black and white prints and 50 cents per page for color prints.
Can you show me how to use the library catalog?
Reference staff are available to assist locating materials in the catalog. More extensive individual instruction is available by request.

The Santa Maria Public Library System includes 197,538 books, 13,721 audio materials, 151,535 electronic audio and eBooks, 18,490 video and DVD materials, and more than 256 magazine and newspaper subscriptions as 2015-16.
