World’s Largest Swimming Lesson

Swimming Lessons Save Lives™ and that is the message that will be delivered during The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL) on Thursday, June 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center in Santa Maria.

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department will be partnering with the WLSL and hundreds of agencies in numerous countries across the globe to stress the importance of teaching children to learn to swim in a global effort to help prevent drowning.

Registration will only take place the day of the event, beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the Swim Lesson will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  All participants will receive a free day use pool pass that can be used this summer, so don’t miss out!

The WLSL is an international noise-making event taking place at pools and waterparks around the globe to focus attention on the vital importance of teaching kids to swim. Swimming is a life-saving skill for children and a vital tool to prevent drowning, the second leading cause of unintended, injury related death for children ages 1-14.  According to the WLSL: “Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children aged 1 to 4.”

The Paul Nelson Aquatic Center is located at 600 S. McClelland Street. Questions may be directed to (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
